Wildlife Teeth Aging Program

Wildlife Teeth Aging Program

APOS members have the opportunity to participate in our Wildlife Teeth Aging Program, which was originally launched in 2021, to help compile information on the age of the animals harvested by their clients. The Wildlife Teeth Aging Program uses cementum annuli aging to assess the annual cementum deposits on the roots of mammals’ teeth to determine the age of a harvested animal. Used in conjunction with other technologies, this information can also provide insight into the reproductive history and migratory patterns of wildlife species. After several years of working with DeerAge.com, in 2023 the program moved to the new Wildlife Analytics Lab at Lethbridge College, which APOS supported through its Wildlife Management Fund (WMF). APOS members who are interested in participating can contact the APOS office to obtain their teeth aging kits; non-members who would like more information about teeth aging services should contact the Wildlife Analytics Lab directly.
