Choose Alberta for Bison, Coyotes and Wolves

Bison, timber wolves and coyotes are true free ranging trophies of Alberta!

Bison Bison

Free ranging wild bison are one of North America’s most unique and impressive trophies. Alberta offers one of the very few opportunities to hunt these magnificent animals in a truly fair chase situation.

Bison may be hunted anywhere they are found in northern Alberta, except within the national park and within a new Bison Protection Area in northwestern Alberta, where they have been recently re-introduced. This may be one of the toughest hunting experiences on the continent!

Most of this region can only be traveled in winter when the creeks and muskegs are frozen. Hunters may travel up to 100 miles in a day by snowmobile searching for fresh tracks, which if found must be followed up on foot. No license is required to hunt bison in Alberta, and because they are not considered pure wood bison, a CITES permit is not required for export.

Wolf Wolf

Wolf populations are high throughout the Boreal, Foothills and Mountain Regions of Alberta. These wolves can reach 120 pounds in weight and vary in color from light gray to black.

Wolves may be hunted by the holder of a wolf license (a nominal fee) from the opening of any big game season until the end of the spring bear season.

Some outfitters offer winter wolf hunts, when the pelts are at their best, and no other hunting seasons are open. Baiting wolves is legal and effective. As well, during late February and early March, wolves can be “howled in” during the mating season.

There is no limit on wolves, but they are subject to CITES regulations. Hunters may not take their wolf trophy home with them, but must wait for the issuance of a CITES permit and have the trophy shipped.

CoyoteCoyote

Coyotes are abundant in the province, especially in the prairie, parkland and foothills regions.

There is no limit on coyotes in Alberta and pelts taken during the winter prime season are thick and well furred. In general, coyotes may be hunted year round on private lands and from October 1st until February 28th on public lands. During open big game seasons however, the coyote hunter must possess a big game license valid for that open season and management unit.

The serious coyote hunter should wait until the end of the big game season (usually Nov. 30) when pelts are at their best and other hunters not a field. A wolf /coyote license is required.
